Pianist and composer Gemma Turvey transcends classification. Fusing classical and jazz influences, there is a grace to her compositions and improvisations, and a melodic Celtic underpinning that transfixes and transports her audiences. A graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Gemma studied with renowned classical pianist and pedagogue Stephen Savage, as well as jazz pianists Louise Denson and Stephen Newcomb. Since graduating in 2005, Gemma has continued to develop her own musical voice; her music becoming a fast favourite with audiences.
Gemma is an experienced and seasoned performer and has performed nationally and internationally in Europe and south-east Asia. Her music enjoys national air-play on ABC Classic FM's Drive as well as state-wide and local radio. Her album Into the Life of Things was also featured extensively on Qantas In-flight Entertainment (International) during 2009/10.
Gemma is an active composer, having written and arranged the music for her last two albums. In April of this year, Gemma founded a small chamber group - The New Palm Court Orchestra - as a vehicle to perform her growing body of new compositions that require a string ensemble, woodwinds and brass. The New Palm Court Orchestra will feature on her upcoming album Rose Gold - currently in pre-production. She is also currently completing her first major work for Piano Trio and Orchestra. Gemma has written music for iconic Australian television series Neighbours and most recently the soundtrack for short film Voyeurnet, produced by Park Films (Jerrycan – Jury Award, Cannes Film Festival 2008).
Gemma is currently based in Melbourne, Australia where she performs with her trio at venues including Bennetts Lane and Paris Cat Jazz Clubs. She is also teacher of piano at North Melbourne Institute of TAFE's Bachelor of Music Program.
