The New Palm Court Orchestra
The New Palm Court Orchestra

The New Palm Court Orchestra's 2014 program plays host to one of America's most innovative cellists Eugene Friesen for his premiere Australian appearance and also to Melbourne's own virtuoso jazz vibraphonist, Craig Beard. Their concerts promise to be a highlight on the Australian Music Calendar.

Multi-Grammy award winning cellist Eugene Friesen (USA) joins the NPCO as soloist for a series of very special performances in March 2014 including concerts at the Utzon Room at Sydney Opera House, the picturesque Stones of the Yarra Valley and at The Salon at Melbourne Recital Centre.

The NPCO will also unite with Melbourne's own virtuoso jazz vibraphonist Craig Beard who returns to play with the NPCO as part of their
three-concert series at The Melbourne Recital Centre Salon.

About The New Palm Court Orchestra

Palm Court Orchestras were popular in the 1920's and 30's for playing light instrumental music in an intimate setting. The New Palm Court Orchestra injects this seductive format with a new and fresh vitality, delivering a stunning, rich palette of beautifully evocative original music.

Australian pianist/composer Gemma Turvey formed The New Palm Court Orchestra (NPCO) in 2011. The NPCO is a natural extension of Gemma's jazz piano trio work, bringing to life the evocative, cinematic qualities inherent in her music.

The NPCO is a chamber ensemble with a core of nine players featuring some of Melbourne's best jazz, classical and improvising musicians. Lead by Gemma at the piano, the ensemble comprises double bass, drum kit, string quartet, clarinet and French horn. Additional instrumentalists including Flugelhorn and vibraphone join from time to time.

The NPCO released their album 'Landscapes for a Mind's Eye' with acclaim at the Melbourne Recital Centre Salon in October 2012, and in 2013 completed a highly successful East Coast tour of Australia, including stand out performances at the Sydney Opera House's Utzon Room, The Great Hall in Canberra and the Noosa Long Weekend Festival.
