The New Palm Court Orchestra was formed in 2011 by Gemma Turvey as a natural extension of her jazz piano trio work; providing a broader canvas for her evocative compositions.
The NPCO is a core of nine musicians, lead by Gemma on piano who brings together musicians from classical, jazz and Celtic disciplines for this ensemble. Additional musicians also join as required. Their album Landscapes for a Mind's Eye exclusively features Gemma's compositions for the ensemble, and includes accomplished soloists Craig Beard on vibraphone, singers from premiere vocal group Ensemble Gombert and a rare performance on uilleann pipes. Many of the musicians in the NPCO also play regularly with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Melbourne Chamber Orchestra.
Landscapes for a Mind's Eye is Gemma Turvey's third commercial release, and first featuring the NPCO. They launched the album with a stand out concert at the Melbourne Recital Centre Salon during the 2012 Melbourne Fringe Festival.
The New Palm Court Orchestra is touring the East Coast of Australia with several concerts in the first half of 2013. Fresh from standout performances at the Sydney Opera House's Utzon Room and The Great Hall, University House in Canberra in April, they head to South-East Queensland in June, performing in Brisbane at Old Government House and at the Noosa Long Weekend Festival. For full concert details click here, or see the 'Performances' page.
Palm Court Orchestras were popular in the 1920's and 30's for playing light instrumental music in an intimate setting. The NPCO injects this seductive format with a new and fresh vitality, delivering a stunning, rich palette of beautifully evocative original music.
